About the Non Return Valve
Switch an air pump off and gravity starts doing something unhelpful: if the pump sits below the water line, the tank begins siphoning back down the airline towards it. A ruined pump - and a flooded shelf - is the usual result, which is why a non return valve is an essential part for any type of air pump or air driven system.
It works in one direction only. Non return valves allow air to pass through, but prevent water returning back through the air hose and into the electrics of the pump.
