So you've decided that you'd love a new set of paws and that you'd like to buy a cat - but where to start?

While there are lots of local listings, how do you know that cats to buy are from a reputable breeder, and not from a kitten farm? And what questions should you ask about kittens for sale before you part with your cash?

Choosing to Buy a Cat

The first thing to consider is whether you'd like a specific breed. Many cat owners fall in love with a particular breed, and when they decide on a new feline family member, they look for kittens for sale that fit just what they're looking for.

Many more visit a cats rescue, and decide on either adopting a kitten who needs a new home, or look for older rescue cats who are almost always litter trained, friendly, and happy to live in a variety of family settings.

If you'd like to buy a cat of a particular breed, make sure you know that both you and your cat will be happy together, so consider:

• How much time you have to spend with them.
• Whether you need to buy a cat who will be happy living mainly indoors or outdoors.
• If you have other cats, dogs, or children.
• Whether you'd like a lively, playful cat, or a quieter and calmer breed.
• What size of cat you would like, and you have the space to offer.
• How often you can groom your cat.

Looking for Kittens for Sale

Responsible pet ownership isn't just about making sure you have the right equipment for your kitten; you'll need to register with a vet, have a litter tray, feeding bowls, food, grooming equipment and a bed as a minimum (not to mention all the toys!).

It's also crucial to make sure you buy a cat from a reputable source.

When looking at kittens for sale, you should look for:

• Kittens available to see with their mother.
• A breeder who can provide information about where and when the kittens were born.
• Ideally a kitten from a residential home who will be comfortable with the smells, noises and sights they will see around a typical household.
• A happy, healthy kitten who has had their 9-week vaccinations, and doesn't appear stressed, afraid or unwell.

There are many cats to buy from loving homes, and by asking the right questions, you can rest assured you have purchased a cat who is healthy, well and has been cared for properly.

Always ensure that kittens for sale are at least twelve weeks old, have had their vaccinations, and have moved onto solid food before you welcome them into their new home.
